10/19/2010… BTD on a bike with tickets in tow! ;)

Filed under: parking in bike lanes, thumbs up 23/10/2010 @ 10:53 AM

I was SO psyched to see someone riding a Specialized in the Comm. Ave. bike lanes (eastbound near Landry’s) who appeared to be a BTD employee with parking tickets hanging out of his back pocket 🙂 A bike-mounted BTD employee riding the Comm. Ave. lanes and ticketing illegally parked cars… now THAT’S what I’m talking about!

When is the signs going up saying vehicles prohibited form lanes?. Any lawyer could squash these tickets in a second. We need signs !!

  2. JJJ:

Tea, why do we need signs? Vehicles are allowed to use the lanes for many reasons, like turning, entering a parking space and unloading.

Double parking is illegal, and that’s a law. We don’t need a sign at every stop light saying what red means

Tickets being handed out: great news.
I’ve noticed one problem spot on the inbound lanes of Comm leading up to the intersection with the BU bridge. At least one or two old parking spots that have been formally replaced by the new bike lane still retain their old meters which must be confusing to motorists looking for a spot. The last of these leaves the parked vehicle with half its body protruding into the lane. A completed project would included hatch marking these ‘non-spots’ and removing the meters to avoid confusion.

Lucas: I also raised the issue of parking meter spots in the bike lane before the BU Bridge with the City of Boston, and (at the recent follow-up session to the Bike Safety Summit) they told me they are aware of the problem. I have asked Nicole Freedman to provide A-Bbikes with the anticipated time-frame for addressing the issue/spots and will post the answer here once I receive a reply.

  5. JJJ:

It took about a year to get two meters removed on beacon street that resulted in parked cars directly blocking half a lane after kenmore square was redone.

Great idea! With $66 million a year raised through parking tickets, they would really be able to move with bikes. And no idling by their own vans and cars! Win win! Saves money, makes money!
